Rheumatoid Arthritis

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)?

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the connective tissue. Its cause is not known and it most commonly affects the musculoskeletal system. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that result from chronic inflammation in the synovial sheath of the peripheral joints and is thus generally symmetrically distributed. The disease may show mild clinical picture in which only certain joints are affected, or as more the severe form of the disease characterized by heavy deformities. The most common form of the disease is of moderate strength.

How do people get rheumatoid arthritis – Causes?

The causes (etiology) of this disease are not yet fully known.
The key role in the occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis have a substances called proinflammatory cytokines, that already exist in our body (of which the most significant are interleukin-6 and TNF -alpha) as well as B-lymphocytes blood cells.

When inflammation occurs cytokines are activated by the immune system to work as messengers. Inflammation is generally an immune response by the body.

Rheumatoid arthritis – frequency and statistics

According to epidemiological data, the disease affects approximately 1% of the population. This disorder is more common in women; up to four times higher than in the male population. The disease usually begins within the fourth or fifth decade of a person’s life. Some family studies have indicated there is a genetic predisposition for the disease.

Rhematoid arthritis – consequences and difficulties

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, progressive, systemic rheumatic disease. It is characterized by painful and swollen joints, morning austerity and damage functions. Long-term effects may lead to general and working incapacity. Approximately 30% to 50% of people in whom the disease began within their working years are projected to be limited or stop working after 10 years of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, and  approximately 50% to 75% are projected to be affected after 20 years. Costs of treating patients with RA in the US, both directly and indirectly, are estimated at 19 billion dollars every year.

Other types of arthritis

If your joints hurt, does it mean that you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis?

The answer is no, because there are many other conditions or diseases that show similar symptoms and signs.

These diseases can be classified in numerous ways, but the simplest classifications are inflammatory and degenerative. Degenerative diseases occur as a consequence of aging, but those are usually less dangerous and much slower in progress.

The diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis is set on the basis of precisely defined criteria, and if you suspect that you suffer from RA it is recommended to consult your doctor.
